How to Compress 1,000 Event Photos in Your Browser (No Uploads)

A single event shoot produces a folder that's a joy to look at and a nightmare to move. A thousand photos at 8–15MB each is 10–15GB of JPEGs. Try to email that, put it in a WhatsApp chat, or squeeze it into a web gallery, and everything grinds to a halt.

So you Google "compress photos online" — and land on a site that wants you to upload the whole folder first. On hotel Wi-Fi. With a 20-file free limit and a paywall waiting at the download button. And now a stranger's server has a copy of someone's entire wedding.

There's a better way to do this, and it doesn't involve uploading anything at all.

Local compression: your browser is the tool

Modern browsers can read an image file, redraw it at a smaller size, and re-encode it as a lighter JPEG — entirely on your own machine. The files never travel anywhere. That's what our free bulk photo compressor does: drag a folder in, and the compression runs locally in the browser tab. There's no upload step, which also means there's no upload time — the bottleneck is your laptop, not your internet connection.

This matters twice over for event photos. First, speed: skipping the upload of 10GB saves you literal hours. Second, privacy: a wedding album full of identifiable faces never touches a third-party server, so there's no terms-of-service fine print to worry about and nothing to delete afterwards.

Step by step

1. Open the compressor. It works in any modern desktop browser. No account, no install.

2. Drag your folder in. JPG, PNG, and WebP are all accepted. You can select files or drop an entire folder at once.

3. Let it run. Each photo is resized so its longest edge is at most 2048 pixels, then re-encoded as a JPEG at 80% quality. A progress bar tracks the batch, and nothing leaves your machine.

4. Download the ZIP. When it finishes, you get before/after sizes, the percentage saved, and a single ZIP of the compressed set.

Why 2048px at 80% quality is the sweet spot

Those two numbers aren't arbitrary. A 2048-pixel long edge is comfortably sharper than what a phone screen, a WhatsApp chat, or a web gallery will ever display, and 80% JPEG quality is the point where further quality buys you almost nothing visible but costs real megabytes. In practice, straight-off-camera JPEGs shrink dramatically — most 8–15MB frames land well under a megabyte — while still looking crisp on any screen.

If you're compressing specifically so an album survives WhatsApp, one warning: WhatsApp will compress images again when you send them as photos. When you should NOT compress

Honesty section. Compression is for sharing and viewing, not for everything:

Print delivery. A lab printing a 24×36 canvas wants every pixel you shot. Send print orders the originals, always.

Archival. The compressed set is a copy for distribution. Keep your originals — the re-encode also strips EXIF metadata (camera settings, timestamps, GPS), which is nice for guests' privacy but means the compressed files are not a substitute for your archive.

Client final galleries with a full-res promise. If the contract says full resolution, compressed files don't fulfil it. Compress the sneak-peek set instead.

Practical limits of in-browser compression

Because everything runs in the tab, your machine's memory is the ceiling. A thousand photos work fine on a reasonably modern laptop; if you're on older hardware and the tab starts struggling, split the job into a few batches of a couple hundred photos. Output is always JPEG — if you drop in PNGs or WebP files, they come out as JPEGs too, which is what you want for photographs (but not for screenshots with sharp text).
