Wedding album photos: choosing a hundred from a gallery of thousands
Choosing wedding album photos is easier if you work out what the book will say before you open the gallery. A typical album holds around a hundred images. The gallery you received probably holds several hundred to a few thousand. The research on choosing from large sets says gallery size is only a problem when you look without knowing what you want.

The arithmetic of the album
How many photos in a wedding album is a question with an answer, and the album makers publish it. Queensberry's guide suggests a maximum of six images per spread on average in a 12 by 12 inch album or larger, and up to four in a 10 by 10. Its worked examples: a 20-page album of 40 sides holds 80 to 120 images, a 30-page album of 60 sides holds 120 to 180.
That famous hundred is not an accident. It is roughly what fits in a 20-page album without crowding. Ask your photographer for your page count first. Multiply it, and you have a hard target instead of a feeling.
Too many good photographs
The common view is that large galleries paralyse people. It stems mostly from one study: Iyengar and Lepper's "When Choice Is Demotivating" (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2000). In that paper, shoppers shown 24 jams bought less often than shoppers shown 6.
The effect has not held up well. Scheibehenne, Greifeneder and Todd pooled 63 conditions from 50 published and unpublished experiments, 5,036 participants in all, in the Journal of Consumer Research (2010), and found "a mean effect size of virtually zero but considerable variance between studies". More options sometimes hurt, sometimes help, and on average do neither.
The variance is what helps. That same review points to Chernev (2003). People who knew what they wanted beforehand did better with bigger selections. Choice and satisfaction rose as options grew, "the opposite of choice overload". A couple who have decided what their album is about are in that exact spot.
Write the story before you pick the photographs
Answering how to choose photos for wedding album pages begins before the gallery opens:
- List the chapters. Morning preparations, the service, family groups, portraits, and the reception. Five to eight chapters cover a one-day wedding.
- Assign a set of pages to each section. The ceremony could take a quarter of the album. The cake cutting could take one spread.
- List the people who must be in the photos. Put down every grandparent, both families, and the friends who travelled. That list stops a good album from leaving anyone out.
- Next, go through the gallery chapter by chapter. You are no longer picking a hundred shots out of thousands. You are picking twelve ceremony pictures from three hundred.
- Make your choices on the second run, not the first. Go through quickly and mark every good frame. Then pick only from that marked group.
Two people, one album
Most fights are not about the pictures. They are about chapters. One partner wants more of the party. The other wants more of the families. Deciding the page shares in step two, before anyone looks at a photograph, cuts out most of the argument.
Divide up the chapters that are left. Each person gets the final say on the chapters that matter more to them. Each gets a veto on three photos anywhere else. It is crude. It ends the evening.
