WhatsApp video compression: the size limits, HD, and sending the original

WhatsApp video compression happens to every video you send as an ordinary message. WhatsApp re-encodes it to 720p if you choose HD and 480p if you don't, and it caps the file: its own help page puts the ceiling at 64 MB, or 100 MB on a fast connection. Send the same clip as a document and WhatsApp leaves it alone, up to 2 GB. That is the whole trade. A video that plays in the chat, or the original file.

Fit a video under the size you choose
The free video compressor runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

The limits, in WhatsApp's words

WhatsApp's help article on long videos gives two sets of numbers. First: "The maximum file size for videos sent or forwarded through WhatsApp is 64MB on all platforms." Then, in the next paragraph: "For users with a faster internet connection, the default video size limit is 100MB and 720p resolution. For users with a slower internet connection, the default video size limit is 64MB and 480p resolution." The page doesn't reconcile the two. Plan on 64 MB and treat anything above it as luck.

  • Video message: 64 MB, or 100 MB on a fast connection; 720p in HD, 480p in standard.
  • Document: "The maximum allowed document size is 2 GB." The file reaches the other end untouched.
  • Status: "a maximum duration of 90 seconds".

Standard and HD

Until August 2023 every WhatsApp video went out at 480p. The HD option arrived that month, and GSMArena's report describes the choice as "Standard Quality or HD Quality (aka 480p or 720p)". A 720p frame is 1280 by 720 pixels. A phone records at 1080p or 4K, so HD keeps 44 per cent of the pixels of a 1080p recording and 11 per cent of a 4K one. Standard keeps far less.

To make HD the default, WhatsApp's HD help page gives the path: Settings, then Storage and data, then Media upload quality, then HD quality. The same page carries a warning worth knowing: "The internet connection will impact the quality of media being sent and received, even if the media is sent in HD quality."

The arithmetic behind a blurry video

A video file is its bitrate multiplied by its length. 64 MB is 512 megabits. Spread over one minute, that's about 8.5 megabits a second. Spread over five minutes, about 1.7. The codec that WhatsApp and nearly every phone use is H.264, the standard Wiegand, Sullivan, Bjøntegaard and Luthra described in 2003, and like every lossy codec it saves bits by discarding detail it predicts you won't miss. The fewer bits it has per second, the more it discards. Faces in a moving crowd smear first; dim reception footage turns blocky next. A long video looks worse on WhatsApp than a short one for that reason alone: WhatsApp video quality is set by the seconds you send, not just the button you press.

Sending a long video, four ways

This is how to send long videos on WhatsApp without letting the app control the quality.

  1. Trim it. WhatsApp begins with this: "You have the option to trim the length of the video before sending it." Halving the length gives each second twice the bits.
  2. Send it as a document. Tap attach, select Document, and pick the video. The file travels untouched, up to 2 GB, at its original resolution. There is a catch: chat shows no preview, and the other person must download it before it plays.
  3. Shrink the file yourself, to whatever size you want. The free video compressor asks for a target in megabytes. It scales down to 720p, caps the frame rate at 30, and encodes to stay just under that mark. Keep the target below 64 MB and WhatsApp has nothing left to squeeze. It runs in your browser. The video is never uploaded.
  4. Send a link instead. If your film runs twenty minutes, sharing a link works much better than a chat app. You can read about the free tools and their upload limits in how to send large video files.

Keeping quality when the chat is the only option

  • Record at 1080p and 30 frames a second for clips that will only ever be seen in a chat. 4K at 60 gives you four times the pixels and twice the frames. All of it gets thrown away.
  • Turn HD on as your default before the event begins.
  • Send on Wi-Fi. WhatsApp notes on its pages that a slow connection gets the lower limit.
  • Send the original video, not a forward. A forward is a compressed copy. You can't get that lost detail back.

Wedding videos, and the photos beside them

Videos break a WhatsApp group first at an event. There are forty clips, each compressed, and each downloaded to every phone in the group. Photos do not have to go that way. AccioPix delivers each guest their own photos in WhatsApp from one selfie. It gives them a personal link to the full-resolution originals, so the group chat can stay clear for the videos. The photo side of the WhatsApp question is measured in does WhatsApp compress photos.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp compress videos?

Yes. WhatsApp re-encodes every video sent as a message. It makes them 720p in HD or 480p in standard. The size limit is 64 MB, or 100 MB on a faster connection. Send it as a document, up to 2 GB, and it is not compressed.

What is the WhatsApp video size limit?

WhatsApp's help page lists 64 MB for a video message. On faster connections, it is 100 MB. As a document, the limit is 2 GB.

How do I send HD video on WhatsApp?

Press HD before sending and pick HD quality. Or make it the default under Settings, Storage and data, Media upload quality. HD on WhatsApp means 720p.

How do I send a long video on WhatsApp without losing quality?

Send it as a document. This protects the original file up to 2 GB. If it has to play in the chat, trim or compress it yourself to just under 64 MB at 720p, so WhatsApp does not decide for you.
